Kloster Neuzelle, Stiftskirche St. Marien: Deckel der Taufe - Neuzelle Monastery, St. Mary's Collegiate Church: Baptismal font lid

            Das frühere Zisterzienserkloster Neuzelle wurde 1268 gegründet. Erbaut wurde es auf einem Bergsporn über der Oderniederung. Nach der Reformation war es das einzige Kloster, das in der protestantisch gewordenen Niederlausitz bestehen blieb. Als katholische Insel wurde es in die böhmische Ordensprovinz der Zisterzienser eingegliedert. In der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts wurden die Kirche und die ganze Anlage im süddeutschen Barockstil umgebaut. Das macht das Kloster zu einer Ausnahmeerscheinung in der Region. Nach dem Wiener Kongress musste Sachsen 1815 die Niederlausitz an Preußen abtreten. Als Folge wurde das Kloster 1817 säkularisiert und in Staatsbesitz überführt. Die Klosterkirche diente von nun an der kleinen katholischen Gemeinde, während die einstige katholische Gemeindekirche auf dem Gelände zur Heimstatt der viel größeren protestantischen Gemeinde wurde. Heutzutage wird das Kloster von einer öffentlich-rechtlichen Stiftung verwaltet. Um 1760 wurde östlich der beiden Klosterkirchen ein Garten im barocken Stil errichtet, der sich auf einer Fläche von ca. 4 ha in einen Abts- und in einen Konventgarten gliedert. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Gärten im Land Brandenburg erfolgte in Neuzelle später keine Umgestaltung im Stil des Rokoko oder als Landschaftsgarten. Die barocken Wege- und Wasseranlagen, die steil abfallenden Terrassen, die Orangerie sowie Teile des historischen Pflanzenbestandes konnten erhalten werden. Der Klostergarten gilt deshalb heute als einziger Barockgarten im Land Brandenburg. 1997 begann die Stiftung die Wiederherstellung des Gartens, 2008 erreichte er die heutige Größe. Die Erweiterung auf seine ursprüngliche Größe, nahezu das Doppelte des heutigen Umfangs, ist in Vorbereitung.

The former Neuzelle Cistercian Monastery was founded in 1268. It was built on a mountain spur above the Oder lowlands. When the population of Lower Lusatia converted Protestantism, it was the only monastery to remain active in that region. As a catholic exclave, it was integrated in the Cistercian Province of Bohemia. In the second half of the 17th century the Monastery Church was transformed in South German baroque style. Its architecture is now a singular case in this region. Following the Congress of Vienna, Saxony had to cede Lower Lusatia to Prussia. In 1817 the monastery was secularized and converted into state property. Whereas the Monastery Church continued to be catholic, the second church, built for Neuzelle's few catholic laymen, was from there on home of the far more numerous protestant parish. Today, the Monastery complex is administered by a public foundation. About 1760 a Baroque garden, divided in an Abbot's Garden and a Monks' Garden, was created to the east of the two churches, below the mountain spur, covering about 4 ha. In contrast to other gardens in Brandenburg it was never transformed into a Rococo or landscape garden. The Baroque design of the paths and water systems, the steep terraces, the Orangery and part of the historic plants have been preserved. Therefore this Monastery Garden is considered the only Baroque garden in Brandenburg. In 1997 the Foundation started the restoration of the garden which reached its present size in 2008. The extension to its original size, about double of the present circumference, is being prepared.
