Cilewent Farm - glassless window - a photo on Flickriver

Before glass:-
Glass was once an expensive commodity only available to the wealthy. The less prosperous started to put window 'holes' with shutters into their houses, this allowed light in but obviously created drafts and lost heat. Solution; strips of flattened horn were used after being soaked for weeks or even strips of oiled animal skin.

Dating from around 1470 this cruck-framed house was originally an open hall. The original timber walls were rebuilt in stone during the early part of the 18th century.
This is one of the older styles of Welsh longhouse with cattle and people living under one roof.
Built during the last years of the reign of the house of Plantagenet, this building has seen 26 British Monarchs coming and going.
Originally at Dyffryn Claerwen, Powys, (Radnorshire), Cilewent was removed to St Fagan's Museum in 1959.
It is furnished as it might have appeared in the mid 18th century.
