            In laying the foundation stone of the new town hall at Milner street, Hindmarsh, on Saturday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr. McInnes M.P.) said that full provision had been made in the estimates for the difficulty met with in excavating for the foundations. It had been rumoured in the town that the council would be mulcted for a large sum because the contractors had been compelled to go down about 20 ft. in one place to obtain a solid bottom, on account of the building having been erected on an old river course. 
The new hall has been designed specially for use as a picture theatre and will seat more than 2,000. In addition the present building will be remodelled to provide spacious municipal offices, an enlarged council chamber, an institute library, and modern appointments. The architect is Mr. Chris. A. Smith, and the contractors are F. Fricker, Ltd.
The remodelling of the Port road frontage to harmonise with the new architectural scheme will enable more commodious municipal offices to be provided. Provision will be made, too, for a new library and reading room.

His Excellency the Governor (Sir Winston Dugan), who was accompanied by Lady Dugan, declared open the new town hall at Hindmarsh before about 2,000 citizens last night. A special picture programme was provided by D. Clifford Theatres Limited. Proceeds will be devoted to local charities. The Governor and Lady Dugan were received at the Town Hall by the Mayor (Mr. Mclnnes, M.P.), and the Mayoress. A guard of honour was provided by the members of the Hindmarsh Volunteer Fire Brigade, the S.A. Ambulance Association and the Hindmarsh sub-branch of the R.S.L. Mr. Mclnnes thanked the council for its loyal support in the project, and the ratepayers for sanctioning the loan of £20,000 to carry out the work. 
The Governor said that it was a pleasure for him to join with the citizens in the opening of a building which would be a magnificent addition to the town. Hindmarsh, he said, was almost as old as the State, for this year it would celebrate its 98th birthday.
