Het gebouw van de Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij werd ontworpen door de architect C. Citroen van de firma J.F. Klinkhamer en B.J. Ouëndag. De bouw begon in 1904 met gebouw A; dit kwam gereed in 1907. Het gebouw is onlangs door de Kereta Api Indonesia, Historical Department gerestaureerd en weer schitterend om te zien.  De naam Lawang Sewu betekent duizend deuren in het Javaans. Toen de Japanners in 1942 binnenvielen, werd het gebouw gebruikt als een gruwelijke ondervraging hoofdkwartier waar ze mensen gevangen zetten en doden, er stierven velen waaronder veel Indonesiërs. Reeds lang zijn er meldingen van meerdere spook waarnemingen in dit gebouw, de dolende geesten van de overleden gemartelde.

The building of the Dutch East Indian Railway was designed by the architect C. Citroen of the company  JF Klinkhamer and BJ Ouëndag. Construction began in 1904, building A; it was finished in 1907. The building was recently restored by the Kereta Api Indonesia, Historical Department, of the Indonesian Railways who are still the owner, and again beautiful to see. The name Lawang Sewu means thousand doors in Javanese. When the Japanese invaded in 1942, they used it as a gruesome interrogation headquarter where they jailed and killed a lot of Indonesians.  Long standing reports of multiple ghost sightings in this building
