Celebrating 40 Years - the longevity of the HST is marked on power car 43 318 at Edinburgh Waverley.

            May 2018 marked the 40th anniversary of the High Speed Train(HST) entering front line service on the East Coast Main Line. This special message to mark the occasion adorns LNER power car 43 318 as it sits at the eastern end of Platform 2 at Edinburgh Waverley. 43 318 was at the head of 1E15 0952 hrs Aberdeen-London King’s Cross which left Waverley 10 minutes late at 1240 hrs. They were called Journey Shrinkers in BR advertising of the time, a reference to the shorter journey times which ensued with their introduction. Power car 43 299 was on the other end of the train which will return to Edinburgh as the 1800 hrs from King’s Cross. On the cliff edge above the locomotive is the former Governor’s House (c.1815 )of the one time Calton Jail (closed 1924 and demolished in the 1930s and replaced by St.Andrews’s House, now Scottish Government HQ). Though not in residential use, it still seems to have some use to the civil servants at St. Andrew’s House which is just out of sight to the right.
