Looking eastwards from Calton Tunnels, Edinburgh.

            This view is of the East Coast Main Line a short distance east of Edinburgh Waverley. The North British Railway opened the line between Edinburgh and Berwick on the 22nd June 1846. The track in the bottom right hand corner of the picture exits the original Calton (now the Calton South) Tunnel ( 400 yards). At the time of Waverley’s reconstruction in the 1890s, a second tunnel (now the Calton North Tunnel, 490 yards) was added and formally opened on 28 June 1896. The track centre left is emerging from the newer tunnel. Both the Calton North and South Tunnels were singled as part of track rationalisation and resignalling in the mid-1970s although the tracks through both tunnels are bidirectional. Electrification of the East Coast Main Line north of Doncaster was completed in 1991 and full services commenced on the 8th July that year. Abbeyhill Junction - where trains diverged for Granton, North Leith, Leith Central or the Abbeyhill loop Line - was approximately where the tracks curve in the distance. The floodlights in the distance are at the now closed Meadowbank Stadium.
