The Motorway, Rosyth……….or is it?

            I recently acquired this postcard at a postcard fair in East Lothian and dates from around the time the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964. New approach roads had to be built on both sides of the Forth including Scotland’s first motorway on the Fife side. The view is described as “The Motorway, Rosyth” and the card has been postally used (postmarked Edinburgh but date illegible), being sent by “Liz” to friends in Dundee. The card carries a 12p stamp so was presumably posted after decimalisation in February 1971. The view looks as if it has been taken from the bridge over the newly built road where it passes between Inverkeithing and the B980 Castlandhill Road. The view looks northwards - the new sign in the distance appears to highlight what is known today as Admiralty junction. The upcoming slip road is signed for Kincardine and Kirkcaldy and the road ahead for M90 Perth (in blue). When the first section of the M90 opened in 1964 (along with the A823 (M) towards Dunfermline), the future Perth motorway only stretched from Admiralty interchange (today Junction 1C but originally Junction 1) and the now removed junction in the Duloch area near where today’s B916 meets the B981 (then the A90 main road to Perth.). The postcard view therefore is not really the motorway but at the time was the A90 dual carriageway. However, with the passage of time and the opening of the Queensferry Crossing in 2017, the upgraded A90 south of Admiralty to Scotstoun at South Queensferry (today’s Junction 1) plus the former M9 spur to Kirkliston was all redesignated M90. The postcard writer tells her friends she was “Enjoying herself” but just as so many other postcards state, she writes “weather not so good.”
