Pre-1970s modernisation map of Glasgow Subway

            The Glasgow District Subway Company opened the cable hauled circular underground line in December 1896. The 4 ft gauge and 6.5 mile system was purchased by Glasgow Corporation in 1923, subsequently being electrified at 600v DC in 1935 using the adapted original rolling stock. Around this time, the Corporation Transport Department renamed the system the Glasgow Underground, but in 2003, the present operator, SPT, rebranded it the Subway. The line was closed for modernisation between 1977 and 1980 when four stations were renamed (Govan Cross became Govan, Copland Road became Ibrox, a resited Merkland Street became Partick and Partick Cross became Kelvinhall). New Metro-Cammell built rolling stock was introduced in 1980 and extensive modernisation has since been carried out on the system through the 2010s and 2020s with the rolling stock replaced by new Stadler built trains in 2023/4. In the centre of the map, Glasgow’s docks have been closed and infilled with those north of the river - the Queen’s Dock - now being the site of the Scottish Event Campus.
