Super Blood Wolf Moon - a photo on Flickriver

            This is a composition of the regular moon prior to the lunar eclipse tonight, and the totally eclipsed moon to the upper right. I braved the weather this evening, in single digits, to capture this pair separately. The first moon shot was prior to the eclipse and the reddish one on the right is of course the moon eclipsed by the earths shadow and near the peak of the eclipse.

I had to laugh when I saw that this was being called a "super blood wolf moon." Let me break that down... A supermoon means that the moon will be nearly at its closest. The term blood moon is a recent occurrence, apparently done since 2013. However, I have to comment that this seems fitting given the color of the moon. And the reason it is red is because it's being illuminated by the red light that is the result of sunlight being split into the spectrum of colors as it travels through the atmosphere of the earth. The blue gets scattered and the less bent red light wavelengths are refracted towards the moon. And a wolf moon is the first full moon in January. So, there you have it.
