Alpine Meadows - a photo on Flickriver

Alpine Meadows

            On a trip to Bodie State Park ( or ghost town depending on how you want to look at it ) I noticed these large flocks of sheep in these high meadows. One thing that you barely see unfourtantly are the donkey's amid the flock of sheep.

Later on when I was talking to the photo workshop leader about it he was telling me that the donkeys are there to ward away predator. The donkeys have bells around their necks and they are very persistent about warding any predator that doesn't belong around the flock. There are sheep dogs there as well, but they seem to do a better job of keeping the donkeys in place. 

The workshop leader warned me to watch out for the dogs on the way out and sure enough as I was leaving after midnight I was passing by this area and one of the sheep dogs came out after my car, thankfully he warned me so I knew to expect it, I would not have wanted to hit the little pup.
