2nd Flood Dam 1900

            It was dated by an unknown person as 1900, but it was actually taken in 1899 or 1902.
Splash Dams were used to artificially flood logs to their destination. It was called "flushing". The first splash dam on the Mohawk was built in 1888, it was operated by A. N. Striker and Harrill, and financed by Columbus Cole.  Striker and his son are locally famous for building multiple Lane county covered bridges.
This splash dam was built by homesteaders Frank Lilly, John Lilly and Alson Whipple in 1892 working as the Mill Creek Lumbering Company. This dam was at the eastern edge of the Lillys' homesteads and the other dam they built was on Whipple's homestead. Henry Franklin (he later married Nellie Holcomb) was the architect of these dams which were 18 and 24 feet high.
After they completed logging their homesteads, the wooden portions of the dams were left open. In 1899, Booth-Kelly fixed these dams back to a functional state.
In the spring of 1902, the earthen portion of this dam failed. BBooth Kelly hired Cecil Price and son from Corvallis to rebuild it.  I believe that rebuild is what is pictured here as it appears the work is more extensive than just repairing an existing dam.
Boards from this dam still exist in the bed of Mill creek today.
Booth-Kelly's first camp built in October 1899 was just below this dam. Today all that remains is a few random trash items and the developed spring for the cookhouse. This was Camp 1 and was located just west of Oshkosh creek by about a 1/4 mile.
Oscar Page is reportedly the man sitting on the log in the center of the picture. There are 16 men total in the photo. If you can identify anyone else, please comment.
