The steam donkeys were the work horses of the woods from the late 1800s to the 1950s (although at that date, cat logging was becoming more common).
The is a Booth-Kelly donkey crew.  This simple donkey consists of the steam boiler and two drums. The lower drum holds the mainline (up to 2" in diameter, depending on the donkey configuration) and an upper haul-back line.  The haul back line was much thinner and there was twice as much cable as the mainline.  
When a steam donkey was put in place, the haul-back line was taken out to the furthest distance of the planned logging for this donkey. It was then run through a block (pulley) and then back to the donkey itself, where its end was attached to the end of the main line. 
The operator would wind in the haul back line with pulled the big cable out until it reached the active logging area. Some of these systems could reach out and haul logs in from over 3000 ft away.  When bringing in logs, period documentation stated that they could reach speeds of up to 30 mph.  
Donkeys were also used to work hayboom racks to load the logs onto pole roads/chutes, RR flat cars or, later, logging trucks.
