Alba Iulia: Cetatea - a photo on Flickriver

            The town of Alba Iulia houses, on the hill of the citadel, the fortress Alba Carolina, built at the beginning of the 18th century (1715-1738) at the initiative of the Habsburg Empire on the basis of a project developed by the Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti. The fortress is a Vauban-type stronghold fortress, which served as a strategic defense fortification of the Habsburg Empire against the military efforts of the Ottoman Empire and the consolidation of Habsburg power at the local level.
Located on the site of the ancient fortifications of the Roman camp of the Legion XIII - Gemina - the new fortress, shaped heptagon, extends over an area exceeding 70 HA, with 12 km of walls and could accommodate more than 10 000 soldiers.
