Pont Neuf

            Pont Neuf [New Bridge] is in fact the oldest surviving bridge across the river Seine. It was built to relieve the traffic congestion on the old Pont Notre-Dame. [Yes, they had traffic jams even then it seems]. Because of various interruptions it took from 1578 to 1607 to build the bridge. 

It is really a two-span bridge connecting the Ile de la Cité, [which was the heart of the city in medieval times] to both the right and left banks. The five-arch span links the Ile de la Cité to the left bank. The seven-arch span links it to the right bank. The Pont Neuf’s series of many short arch bridges follows Roman precedents.

All through the 18th century, the Pont Neuf was at the centre of Paris, and all that happens in such a busy city, both legal and illegal.  It was the first bridge with pavements which made it immediately popular with Parisians who used the bridge as a meeting place. It once had shops on the bridge but they were removed when the bridge’s foundations were rebuilt under Napoleon III. It was also the first bridge with no houses built on it – it was decided against their inclusion on the grounds that houses would impede a clear view of the Louvre.

Decorating the bridge you may just see the “mascarons”, stone masks, three hundred eighty-one of them, each being different. They are on both sides of the bridge. They represent the heads of forest and field divinities from ancient mythology, as well as satyrs and sylvains. But we were told that they represented the heads of all those who said that the bridge would not last. These are now copies, many of the originals being in museums.
