            Kazimierz is a historical district of Kraków that for many centuries was a place of coexistence and interpenetration of Christian and Jewish cultures. The north-eastern part of the district was historic Jewish but Jewish inhabitants were forcibly relocated in 1941 by the German occupying forces into the Krakow ghetto just across the river in Podgórze. But since the late 1980s there has been a resurgence of Jewish culture and the restoration of important historic sites together with a booming growth in Jewish-themed restaurants, bars, bookstores and souvenir shops. Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler's List [shot in Kazimierz] has done wonders for the tourist trade. It seems some Jews have also returned to Kazimierz from Israel and America.

I had hummus and pita bread for lunch and was reminded of this “restobar”. Hamsa hummus & happiness specializes in dishes from the modern Israeli and Near East. The name of restaurant is derived from the popular Middle Eastern talisman that brings good luck and protects houses from evil spells - the Hand of Fatima. This symbol is widely known not only in the Jewish culture, but also in Islam.
