            This is a photo of East Cliff with Folkestone harbour in the distance. I believe it’s a black and white photo that has had colour added.

I don’t know when the photo was taken but my guess is the early 1900s. It was certainly taken before 1920 because a promenade was built running beside the beach that year and it is absent from this photo.. That original promenade was replaced by the Coronation Parade in 1935 that you can see in the next [current] photo.

The cliff face looks strangely bare. It is now covered with vegetation and you are warned not to go near the edge due to cliff erosion.  It’s slowly falling into the sea in the area nearest to the photographer.

The big brick building on the left behind the harbour is the Pavilion Hotel built in 1843. 

You can see sailing ships in the harbour and I think the ‘smudge’ beyond the harbour and left of the Pavilion Hotel in the photo is in fact the Victorian pier built in 1887/1888. That means the photo was taken some time after this date but certainly prior to 1920.
