Scarborough - Whitby old railway - a photo on Flickriver

            HISTORY:
The Scarborough & Whitby Railway was a 21-mile coastal line opened  between the two towns in 1885 by the N.E.R. and was the last of a series of routes in North Yorkshire to have been constructed at that time. (others were the  Begun in 1872, the line took 13 years to complete, and comprised eight intermediate stations, Scalby, Cloughton, Hayburn Wyke, Staintondale, Ravenscar, Fyling Hall, Robin Hood's Bay and Hawsker. It was also notable for not actually entering directly into Whitby's town station - the trains arrived high over the tall Larpool viaduct before reversing from Whitby High Cliff station down a 1 in 20 incline to the main terminus.  The line inevitably became popular during the summer period, though not with drivers due to the aforementioned dilly-dallying required at Whitby, and camping coaches were installed at certain stops from the start of the 1930s. Steam trains were slowly replaced with DMUs from 1960.

Sadly, before long, Beeching drew out his  huge bazooka out and slaughtered just about all of the north-eastern Yorkshire lines, except for the Esk Valley route. The Scarborough – Whitby line closed in early 1965 and was progressively dismantled over years that ensued, with people travelling between Scarborough and Whitby needing to trawl via York.and Middlesborough, although the bus has proved somewhat quicker.

The railway now exists as an NCN bike and walking route called the Cinder Path, which covers the 21 mile route in its entirety. Beginning at the back of a Sainsburys supermarket, near the town centre, it soon sets off through the backbone of Scarborough and along the coastal landscape, north. The many stations along the way survive very well intact, aside from Scalby which has long disappeared under residential housing, and some notably Cloughton and Hawsker retain rail carriages, in use as holiday home and bike hire and cafe, respectively. The old tunnel arch, at where the route diverged from the York – Scarborough mainline can also be found, off the far end  of platform 1 at Scarborough station.
