Lost love

            As gardeners, we lose plants.  It happens.  Doesn't matter if we're Master Gardeners or the rankest of beginners, sometimes things either don't make it or they die unexpectedly after bringing much joy.  

This beautiful Hibiscus mutabilis (sometimes called Confederate Rose), was one of those plants that I absolutely loved.  

I bought it five or six years ago as a spindly, single stem plant about three feet tall.  It surprised me by growing quickly but not blooming until the end of October and through mid-November -- a time when lots of other plants have given up for the season.   It made my garden look like springtime in autumn. 

Then, two years ago, for reasons unknown to me, it died.  It has an immense root ball and the bottom of the trunk is very large.  There were many large branches.  It seemed so healthy -- and happy -- and I still don't know what I did wrong!  A case of unrequited love!
