Beim Markuslöwen am Wiener Hauptbahnhof

By the Lion of St. Mark at Vienna Central Station

The sculpture was created in 1873 by the sculptor Josef Leimer for the second Vienna Südbahnhof and is a symbol of the train connection to Venice.

Wien Südbahnhof was closed in December 2009 and was demolished in 2010 to be replaced with a new station, Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station). This new station was opened at the end of 2012 and became fully operational in December 2015.

The sculpture was moved to another location for storage and restoration during the construction period. It was finally transported to its new location in September 2014. This was most certainly not an easy undertaking, as the stone lion, together with the base, is three meters high and weighs a ton.
