Monterey Square, Savannah, GA - a photo on Flickriver

            Monterey Square, in Savannah, GA, was begun in 1847 in honor of the Battle of Monterey in America's war with Mexico.  The statue at its center memorializes the Polish Count, General Casimir Pulaski, who established the American Cavalry and was killed defending Savannah during the American Revolution.  Fort Pulaski, outside Savannah is named for the war hero.  Remains were recently unearthed in Monterey Square and confirmed by DNA tests to belong to the Polish nobleman.  He was re-interred next to the monument seen here.

Facing Monterey Square is the Mercer Williams House, pictured elsewhere in this photostream.  It was begun by the Confederate General Hugh Mercer, grandfather of the song writer, Johnny Mercer, who was born in Savannah and is buried there.  In 1981 its owner, Jim Williams, shot and killed Danny Hansford, apparently his lover, in this house.  (It's now said to be haunted.)  Williams stood trial for murder four separate times, the only person in Georgia history to be tried four times for the same crime.  The first time, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.  He appealed, and the second trial ended when the Georgia Supreme Court overturned his conviction due to irregularities in the first trial.  In a  third trial, the result was a hung jury, 11-1 in favor of conviction.  In the fourth trial, Williams was acquitted.  The whole sordid story is the basis for John Berendt's cracking-good novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and of the movie based on that book.
