Fort De Roovere

Fort de Roovere maakt deel uit van de West Brabantse Waterlinie. Dat is een combinatie van vestingsteden, forten en een inundatiegebied dat ter verdediging onder water kon worden gezet. Als er oorlog dreigde, werd bij Steenbergen een sluis opengezet waardoor het lage maaiveld onderliep. Ten noorden van Bergen op Zoom lag een zandrug te hoog om onder water te zetten. Om dat gat in de verdediging te dichten, werden drie forten gebouwd. Fort de Roovere is het pronkstuk van de linie.
De 25 meter hooge Pompejustoren (uitkijktoren) is in 2016 geopend en biedt uitzicht op de Zuiderwaterlinie. Pompejus is de voornaam van de heer De Roovere, de eerste commandant van het fort.

Fort de Roovere is part of the West Brabant Waterline. This is a combination of fortified towns, fortresses and an inundation area that could be flooded for defense. When war threatened, a sluice was opened near Steenbergen, flooding the low ground level. To the north of Bergen op Zoom, a sand ridge was too high to be submerged. Three fortresses were built to close that gap in the defense. Fort de Roovere is the showpiece of the line.
The 25-meter high Pompejustoren (watchtower) was opened in 2016 and offers a great view of the Zuiderwaterlinie. Pompejus is the given name of Mr. De Roovere, the first commander of the fort.
