A varied tit going to take off with a berry of a Japanese snowbell

            Within 1 second after cutting off the berry (previous photo; right), the bird managed to change the holding position of the stem and was ready for departure as shown in this photo. Then, the bird was flying. In Nagoya, Japan.

The varied tit (Sittiparus varius) lives in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. One of its favorite foods is seeds of Japanese snowbells (Styrax japonica). Since outer portion of the fruit is weakly toxic, the bird carefully removes the outer portion before enjoying the seed. Other birds stay away from the fruit.
