The University of Santiago de Compostela (in Galician and officially Universidade de Santiago de Compostela - USC) is a public university based in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (Spain), and campus in Santiago de Compostela and Lugo.
It was founded in 1495 by Lope Gómez de Marzoa and is, with its more than 500 years, the longest-standing university in Galicia, and one of the oldest in the world.
Since its inception, the University enjoyed an important cultural and economic boost under the archbishopric of Alonso III de Fonseca, an educated man, patron and friend of Erasmus of Rotterdam. Thus, from the beginning of the 16th century, the University will have several University Colleges where theology, grammar and art studies will be taught, a training offer that will soon be completed with Law and Medicine degrees.
The USC will have great importance during the period of the Enlightenment, so King Carlos III will distinguish this University with the title of Royal and will add the symbol of the Crown that, along with the arms of Castilla, León and Galicia, and the emblems of the founders of the institution, make up the coat of arms of the University. Shortly after, the students gave an example of patriotism by forming the famous Literary Battalion that fought against the French during the Spanish War of Independence.
In the 20th century, we witnessed a spectacular growth in the number of students and degrees offered, which is why new faculties and university campuses appear, creating two new institutions (the University of Vigo and the University of La Coruña) that will complement the educational offer of the Capitoline University.
The University is currently finalizing the adaptation to the EHEA and offers a large number of undergraduate, master and doctorate degrees from all areas of knowledge. In 2009, the USC was recognized for its Campus Vida project as a Campus of International Excellence by the Ministry of Education, a distinction that places it among the 9 best universities in the country. The university's short-term goal is to become one of the 100 best biosanitary campuses in the European Union.

La Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (en gallego y oficialmente Universidade de Santiago de Compostela - USC) es una universidad pública con sede en Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (España), y campus en Santiago de Compostela y Lugo.
Fue fundada en 1495 por Lope Gómez de Marzoa y es, con sus más de 500 años, la universidad de más larga tradición de Galicia, y una de las más antiguas del mundo.
Ya desde sus inicios, la Universidad gozó de un importante impulso cultural y económico bajo el arzobispado de Alonso III de Fonseca, hombre culto, mecenas y amigo de Erasmo de Róterdam. Así, desde principios del siglo XVI, la Universidad contará con varios Colegios Universitarios donde se impartirán estudios de Teología, Gramática y Arte, oferta formativa que se verá pronto completada con las carreras de Derecho y Medicina.
La USC tendrá gran importancia durante el período de la Ilustración, por lo que el rey Carlos III distinguirá a esta Universidad con el título de Real y añadirá el símbolo de la Corona que, junto con las armas de Castilla, León y Galicia, y los emblemas de los fundadores de la institución, conforman el blasón de la Universidad. Poco después, los estudiantes dieron ejemplo de patriotismo formando el famoso Batallón Literario que combatió contra los franceses durante la Guerra de Independencia Española.
En el siglo XX asistimos a un espectacular crecimiento en el número de estudiantes y titulaciones ofertadas, por lo que surgen nuevas facultades y campus universitarios, creándose además dos nuevas instituciones (la Universidad de Vigo y la Universidad de La Coruña) que complementarán la oferta educativa de la Universidad capitolina.
Actualmente la Universidad está finalizando la adaptación al EEES y oferta una gran cantidad de títulos de grado, máster y doctorado de todas las áreas de conocimiento. En el año 2009 la USC ha sido reconocida por su proyecto Campus Vida como Campus de Excelencia Internacional por el Ministerio de Educación, distinción que la sitúa entre las 9 mejores universidades del país. El objetivo de la universidad a corto plazo es convertirse en uno de los 100 mejores campus biosanitarios de la Unión Europea.
La Biblioteca de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, con 1 227 796 volúmenes, es la quinta biblioteca universitaria más grande de España tras la Biblioteca de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y las bibliotecas de la Universidad de Barcelona, la Universidad de Sevilla y la Universidad de Valencia. Por otro lado, cuenta con un repostiorio en línea, donde se pueden consultar libros, revistas, Trabajos de Fin de Grado (TFG), Trabajos de Fin de Máster (TFM), tesis...
