Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express luxury train

            Once or twice a week the luxury train "Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express" or VSOE crosses Switzerland on its way from London to Venice. This luxury train, which has been in service since 1982, is designed for an exclusive clientele with high payment capacity (fare London - Venice > 1500€) and is operated by the famous Belmond company. It is in the league of the Blue Train (Cape Town - Johannesburg), Rovos Rail (Trips through southern Africa) or the Eastern & Oriental Express (Singapore - Bangkok). Besides the regular route from London to Venice, other trips (once a year until Istanbul!) are offered several times a year.

The coaches date from the era of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL) and have been extensively restored and modernized. While the journey in direction south-north passes through Switzerland at night, the most beautiful section of the route over the Gotthard in direction north-south is traveled during the day. It is one of the few locomotive-hauled trains still running over the old mountain route. 

The picture shows the train in Oberrüti, shortly before the operational stop in Rotkreuz where fresh bread rolls for breakfast are brought from the bakery into the train.
