H19 Under The Poles - a photo on Flickriver

            Just another frame I liked of the llast freight train I was fortunate to shoot on my recent Pennsylvania trip a month ago. This is Norfolk Southern local H19 from Enola to Dillerville Yard in Lancaster headed east.  The SD60E and SD40E duo have just swung off NS' Port Road Branch at COLA interlocking and are climbing up the grade on the dozen mile long Columbia Secondary.  This single track branch was electrified by the PRR in 1938 and remained so until CR denergized all freight operations in early 1981. Although lined with customers the route also served as a bypass route for freight traffic from Enola to Lancaster keeping them off the passenger heavy mainline, a role that H19 continues to play today by avoiding Amtrak's Harrisburg Line.  While most of the catenary poles along the route have been removed a few remain here to remind one of the era of PRR/PC/CR electrified freight operations.
