Amtrak 175 - a photo on Flickriver

On a flat gray afternoon Amtrak Boston to Washington regional train 175 cruises east down Main 1 on at MP 189.8 on the New Haven Line (Northeast Corridor) in this view looking down off Barton Avenue.

Straddling the mainline is the splendid old Pawtucket-Central Falls station which was constructed by the New Haven Railroad between 1914-1915 but was closed only 45 years later. From 1959 to 1981 trains continued to stop at the platforms down below, which passengers accessed via stairs directly from the street. Pawtucket just recently regained a stop for MBTA commuter trains, but rather than rebuilding this station a new modern facility on tangent track that was able to be equipped with high level platforms was built a few blocks away just railroad west of by the former freight yard. Who knows what fate will ultimately befall this edifice to the glory days of railroading, but for now it makes a nice prop!
