Photo taken in 1974 with Konica Autoreflex A camera. Remains of a town now in the lava beds. Eruption began in 1943 and ended a decade later. The erupting volcano can be seen in the Hollywood costume epic, Captain from Castile with Tyrone Power, Jean Peters, Cesar Romero, and Lee J. Cobb. The film crew deliberately took production to Michoacan, Mexico knowing the volcano was erupting. The volcano made headlines during the decade it erupted. This photo of the still standing church engulfed by lava gives scale to the last lava flow you see in the foreground. The lobe of lava in the foreground was probably erupted in the early 1950s just before the volcano stopped erupting. Vegetation has slowly begun to turn the rock to fertile soil. Volcanic soil is the most fertile on the planet and volcanic soils are always heavily cultivated around the globe.
