The Wyandotte is a relatively large (2.7 to 3.2kg for females, 3.5 to 4kg for males) breed of chicken which originated in the United States in the 1870s. The name Wyandotte comes from a native American tribe which could be found in the north east of the USA and parts of Canada.

The Columbian strain, of which this bird is an example, came from cross breeding the original Wyandotte with another breed called the Plymouth Rock chicken. No, it doesn't have anything to do with the nation of Colombia; the name came from the Chicago World Fair of 1893, known also as the Columbian Exposition and World's Fair (celebrating 400 years since Christopher Columbus).

Wyandottes are dual purpose birds, being usable for both eggs and meat. Not at the same time, obviously.

This one is a cockerel (a male under1 year old) so he's probably not fully grown. He took out first prize for his category.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any good information on numbers by breed in Australia. They don't seem to be uncommon, but that's as far as I can get.
