National Zoo and Aquarium (Jamala Lodge), Yarralumla (Canberra) ACT

It's almost painful when you get so many "money shots" in the one group and you really can't decide which ones to publish and which ones not to. In this case, with the photogenic nature of giraffes combined with the golden light of sunrise, it's a near impossible task.

I don't want to be one of those people who has their shutter on full burst and puts up 750 shots of the one subject, taken a fraction of a second apart.

I've put up only one other shot from this set at the time of writing, which was a longer shot of Skye, the 12 year old female of the pair. In this one I've tightened up a bit to make it a closeup of her.

She almost seems to be staring at me. "Hey, you guys all gave me carrots yesterday, why aren't you giving me carrots today??". I would if I could, my friend, I would if I could. With that impassively pleading face I'm sure that she's had more than one guest kicked out of the Zoo for breaking the rules, assuming that they had any spare carrots with them. (Which I grant you is unlikely but, you know, in theory I mean.)

There are a couple of others that I may publish, but the way Skye's relaxed but mooching character shows through in this one... I just had to add it to the list.

Edit 17 August 2025: I'll get it right eventually. In the initial comments on this shot there are references to "he" and "him". That's because when I first posted this shot I had misidentified this as Khamisi, the male of the two. Then I noticed how dark the horns are, how straight they are (Khamisi's curve outward a bit) and how relatively small the ridge on the nose is; this is definitely Skye. Ooops. Sorry, Skye. I didn't actually feed Skye yesterday; she was down at Treehouse #5 next door. I fed Khamisi. Still, if I can't reliably tell giraffe's apart, Skye probably can't tell hoomins apart either. ("Really, all I see is the carrots...")
