Abandoned Alberta on film # 13 - a photo on Flickriver

            Couple of more photos from Orion, Alberta. Shot these with my Fuji GA645 and Ferrania P30.

Orion was originally known as "Needmore". A postoffice opened there in 1912 by swedish postmaster Axel Mattson. Trainline to town was completed in 1915, and the town was renamed Orion (after the constellations in the sky).  The latter was born in 1916, and two years later, following steady, copious rain and a plentiful crop yield. The population grew to 150, with a main street boasting three general stores, a hotel, bank, blacksmith, and cafe. At its peak it had 400 residents. The decline startet during the depression, with drought, dust storms and grasshoppers. Today the population of Orion is less then 10. I visited well over 20 "ghost towns" during my roadtrip in Canada, and this town was definitely one of the favorites. It has lots of beautiful abandoned buildings and the few residents I meet was very friendly and knowledgeable.
