The Erebus Bell replica - 3D at work

            THE BELL TOLLS FOR FRANKLINI stopped by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto early Christmas Eve to take this picture for Diver Magazine.The bell, shown below, was installed at the Museum by Parks Canada and the ROM early in December as part of an evolving exhibition about the wreck of the Erebus and the Franklin Expedition. The Erebus was discovered underwater in the high arctic by divers in September. Even though the bell has been underwater for 170 years it is in very good condition.This however is not the actual bell, it is actually a 3D printed replica of the recovered Erebus bell. Created by Toronto’s Think2Thing (David Didur and internationally renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky), the replica makes the bell accessible to museum goers while the original undergoes extensive conservation treatment.The replica bell is in a pop-up display on the first floor of the ROM. As part of the presentation there is a audio tape playing of the ship's bell! (not sure if it is real or another sample of high tech simulation)
