Edouard Groenhage, Hrad Strekov - a photo on Flickriver

August 20: On Tuesday afternoon, I got into conversation with Edouard Groenhage from Groningen, the Netherlands, at a cycling bistro next to the Elbe. He was following the Elbe northwards to Cuxhaven on a lightly loaded racing bike. He spends the night in hotels. All fine, just 'cyclists-to-each-other'.

But then it happened. Edouard is already over 80. He survived a cardiac arrest. In 2019, he was involved in a car accident that paralyzed his right leg. His doctor and physiotherapist gave up on him: you will never be able to cycle again  😢.
But Edouard had been an avid, well-trained racing cyclist all his life. If my memory serves me correctly, he rode the long and tough endurance race from Trondheim to Oslo 30 times.
He did not give up that quickly. He started to systematically train his leg. And a little over a year later he was back on the bike and making long trips. The nerve pathways had recovered.
His therapist's reaction: I will never say 'never' or 'impossible' again.

I thought this was worth telling. In some cases, with willpower and perseverance, you can ridicule the prognoses of science.
In short: don't give up too quickly when bad news is dumped on you. Your body has a self-healing capacity, apparently even at an advanced age. As Edouard testifies.
