Jepson Prairie Exploration - a photo on Flickriver

            On April 10th about 20 people signed up for an opportunity to explore an area of the Jepson Prairie normally closed to the public.  There was a fascinating presentation of the ecology of the aquatic animals in seasonal Olcott Lake (really, a large vernal pool) and then a couple hours spent looking at native plants of the surrounding vernal pools.  The native plants are all of a 1/4-inch tall, some may reach an inch so much of your time here is spent on your knees. Some of these plants are incredibly rare, but collectively they are a wonderful example of California's unique native flora.  Thanks go out to the Solano Land Trust and Cal Flora for hosting this event.  I found the energy here similar to a railfan event with locomotives, but with botanists and plants instead.
