Black Stork

            With a body length of around 95 cm, the black stork is about the same size as the white stork. Its plumage is black and has a metallic sheen in adults. The belly, parts of the breast, and the undertail coverts are white.

The beak and legs of the adults are red; this coloration is particularly intense during the breeding season. The long and powerful beak is straight, and the neck is stretched in flight (unlike the grey heron).

Black storks weigh approximately 2.4-3 kg, with males being slightly heavier than females. They can achieve a wingspan of 170-205 cm and are thermal soarers. Nevertheless, they are also agile flyers when it comes to navigating the forest between trees to reach the nest.

The fledged young birds are dull brown in their first year, with legs and beaks gray-yellow.
The oldest ringed stork is 18 years old; in captivity, black storks can live up to 30 years.

Mit einer Körperlänge von etwa 95 cm ist der Schwarzstorch etwa so groß wie der Weißstorch. Sein Gefieder ist schwarz und glänzt bei erwachsenen Tieren metallisch. Bauch, Teile der Brust und die Unterschwanzdecken sind weiß.

Schnabel und Beine der erwachsenen Tiere sind rot; diese Färbung ist während der Brutzeit besonders intensiv. Der lange und kräftige Schnabel ist gerade, und der Hals ist im Flug gestreckt (im Gegensatz zum Graureiher).

Schwarzstörche wiegen etwa 2,4–3 kg, wobei die Männchen etwas schwerer sind als die Weibchen. Sie erreichen eine Flügelspannweite von 170–205 cm und fliegen in der Thermik. Dennoch sind sie auch wendige Flieger, wenn es darum geht, im Wald zwischen den Bäumen zum Nest zu gelangen.

Die flügge gewordenen Jungvögel sind im ersten Jahr mattbraun, mit graugelben Beinen und Schnäbeln.
Der älteste beringte Storch ist 18 Jahre alt; in Gefangenschaft können Schwarzstörche bis zu 30 Jahre alt werden.
