Terek Sandpiper - a photo on Flickriver

Terek Sandpiper

            This bird, being a vagrant, is quite rare to New Zealand though worldwide their numbers are estimated at around 50,000. The Terek sandpiper breeds in the boreal taiga zone of Eurasia. Only a few reach New Zealand every summer. They fly halfway around the world. This to me is astonishing as they are only the size of a Wrybill. It is also fairly flighty so I couldn't get any close-up shots. Hence, these are quite tight crops that I upsized with Topaz Gigapixel 8.
