If time could tell

That tree from a different perspective. I took this photo today and have used a mixture of editing tools in iPhoto and BeFunky to create an image which I hope gives a sense of time. I am ever constantly aware that my area is changing; that landmarks will soon disappear under concrete and yet here is this tree, an oak, which has no doubt stood for at least 200 years at the edge of this lane. It is near the village school in Cliddesden and I know it must have been a landmark even when that school was opened in 1876. The fact that it is still there dominating the country road to Ellisfield makes me think of how we ignore time at our peril. Trees give depth of time and space to a landscape: they should not be cut down with the idea they can be replaced with new or not at all, as has happened both in this country and abroad.
