Amaryllis (Hippeastrum, family Amaryllidaceae)

            The amaryllis with its large, eye-catching blossom is a true beauty among flowers. 

The naturalist Carl von Linné, who knew a young and beautiful shepherdess named Amaryllis, gave this plant its name. 
As a symbol of a beautiful woman, he also gave this flower the epithet "Belladonna". 

The amaryllis in the picture is actually a Hippeastrum - an amaryllis because it has a hollow stem and blooms at Christmas time. 
The real "true amaryllis", the belladonna, has a double stem and does not flower at Christmas time. 
But the two look very similar.

Die Amaryllis mit ihrer großen auffälligen Blüte ist eine wahre Schönheit unter den Blumen. 

Der Naturforscher Carl von Linné, der eine junge und schöne Hirtin mit dem Namen Amaryllis kannte, gab dieser Pflanze den Namen. 
Dieser Blume als Symbol für eine schöne Frau, gab er zusätzlich den Beinamen "Belladonna". 

Die Amaryllis auf dem Bild ist eigentlich ein Ritterstern, weil sie einen hohlen Stiel hat und zur Weihnachtszeit blüht. 
Die wirklich "Echte Amaryllis", die Belladonnalilie, hat einen gefüllten Stiel und blüht nicht in der Weihnachtszeit. 
Aber, beide sehen sich sehr ähnlich.
