Rostganspärchen / Ruddy Shelduck couple

            Rostgänse gibt bei uns in Europa eigentlich gar nicht. Sie sind an Salzseen innerasiatischer Wüsten und Steppen zuhause und überwintern in Indien. Entweder die beiden haben sich grandios verflogen oder, was natürlich wahrscheinlicher ist, es handelt sich wieder um Ex-Insassen eines Parks oder Zoos. Ich hatte beim spazierengehen zunächst den Ganter auf einem Tümpel schwimmen sehen und erst für einen weiteren Stockentenhybrid gehalten. Der schwarze Halsring kam mir dann aber seltsam vor und ich behielt ihn im Blick. Nach einer Weile schwam er ans Ufer und da sah ich im Gras auch seine Gans, die keinen Halsring, sondern einen weißen Kopf hat. Nach einer Bildersuche wurde mir klar, dass ich gerade seltene Gäste vor mir habe. Mein Problem war, ich hatte nur meinen Feldstecher dabei. Zwei Tage später hatte ich Zeit, bin nach der Arbeit mit der Kamera wieder hingegangen und hatte Glück - die beiden waren noch da. Wie bei Gänsen üblich sind sie sehr wachsam und haben mich nicht sehr nahe herangelassen. Das Foto hat deshalb mehr einen dokumentarischen als einen künstlerischen Charakter. Aber wenn schon mal so ein Exot vor der Haustür auftaucht, dann muss man die Gelegenheit beim Schopf packen.

There are actually no Ruddy Shelducks  in Europe. They are at home at salt lakes in inner Asian deserts and steppes and overwinter in India. So either the two got lost on transit completely, or, more likely, they are ex-inmates of a park or zoo. While out for a walk I first saw the gander swimming in a pond and initially thought it was another mallard hybrid. But the black neck ring seemed strange to me and I kept an eye on it. After a while he swam to the shore and I saw his goose in the grass, which has no neck ring but a white head. After searching for images, I realized that I had rare guests here. My problem was, I only had my binoculars with me. Two days later I had spare time, went after work back with the camera and was lucky, they were both still there. As usual with geese, they are very alert and didn't let me get very close. The photo therefore has more of a documentary rather than an artistic character. But when such an exotic animal is on your doorstep, you have to seize the opportunity.
