rufender Basstölpel / calling Gannet

            Dieses Portrait habe ich im August 2022 fotografiert. Die Basstölpel waren mit dem Aufziehen der jungen beschäftigt und die Eltern wechselten sich bei Füttern und Aufsicht am Nest ab. Damit das Teamwork klappt, wird viel kommuniziert. Der Basstölpel auf dem Bild ruft gerade laut damit sein Partner auch sicher weiß, wo er hinkommen soll. Im August 22 war die Vogelgrippe noch kein großes Thema auf Helgoland. Weniger Wochen später sollte sich das dramatisch ändern. Viele Seevögel starben in der Pandemie. Der Basstölpel im Foto hat die schönen blauen Augen und eine weiße Iris. Mit der Vogelgrippe tauchten später vermehrt Basstölpel mit einer schwarzen Iris auf. Diese Verfärbung scheint die Folge einer überstandenen Infektion zu sein. Man weiß noch nicht, ob/wie sich diese Veränderung auf die Sehkraft auswirkt und ob sich das mit der Zeit wieder zurückentwickelt.

I took this portrait in August 2022. The gannets were busy raising their young and the parents took turns feeding and supervising the nest. They communicate a lot so that the teamwork works. The gannet in the picture is calling loudly so that its mate knows where to go. In August 22, bird flu was not yet a major issue on Helgoland. A few weeks later, this was to change dramatically. Many birds died in the pandemic. The gannet in the picture has beautiful blue eyes and a white iris. With bird flu, gannets with a black iris began to appear in increasing numbers. This discolouration appears to be the result of an infection that has been overcome. It is not yet known whether/how this change will affect their eyesight and whether it will regress over time.
