Bardejov - Fortification X01 - a photo on Flickriver

The Bardejov fortification system was one of the most perfect and well-preserved Gothic town fortifications protecting Slovak medieval towns. The first mention of it dates back to 1352, when King Ludovít I ordered to fortify the town with walls, fortify it with bastions and close it with impregnable gates for its safety.

At the end of the 14th century, a stone wall with four city gates - Upper, Powder, Lower and Simon Walla - already stood around the entire perimeter of the town. Later, Renaissance builders applied many fortification elements, adapted to the development of new combat technology.

In the 18th century, the importance of the town fortifications declined, as a result of which the Bardejov town fortifications also began to deteriorate. However, it was not destroyed. Since the 1950s, a gradual repair and reconstruction of the walls.

The city fortification in Bardejov represents typical medieval fortification: a moat filled with water, high bastions which reinforced the main wall, a shooting gallery and an inner gallery, the main entrances being small fortifications in themselves. The bastions were circular, lentil and square in plan. Some were roofed, others were open towards the city. The naming corresponded to their shape and the place where they stood.

In total there were 23 outposts in Bardejov. To this day preserved 12. The largest of them is the so-called Rough Bastion on the southeastern side of the fortification. The other bastions of the fortification are in a row: the Small Bastion, the Upper Gate, the Powder Gate, the Monastery Bastion, the School Bastion, the Simon Walla Gate (West), the Archive (North) Bastion, the Renaissance Bastion, the Lower Gate, the Red (Royal) Bastion and the Great Bastion.

Bardejov city walls have been preserved the most completely of all medieval towns in Slovakia and their importance ranks them among to the European Heritage Fund.
