Llanyravon Mill, Llanfrechfa Way, Cwmbran 9 April 2016

            The mill was part of the Manor of Edlogan, and is mentioned in manorial papers dated 1632, but internal timbers and original machinery suggest it is much older. It was powered by water drawn from a weir upstream on the Avon Lwyd, the leat running away back into the river across what is now Llanfrechfa Way. Part of the leat is still visible as a ditch running alongside the Llanyravon Court Care Home. Since the mill had three grinding stones it was officially referred to as Llanyravon Mills.

It was run by a succession of tenant millers until the 1920s when it was sold and was run by an owner-miller, a Tom Wait, for the first time.  Until the 1940s the machinery was still wooden, replaced many times over; at this time metal gearing was introduced.

The mill ceased operating in the 1950s and in 1967 was bought by the Cwmbran Development Corporation in 1967. In 1971, the still redundant building was set on fire by youths and it was believed this was the end of the building. In 1977 money was made available by the government to finance projects for unemployed persons and the mill was restored. The Friends of Llanyravon Mill now look after it.  

A rare example of preservation of the area's heritage by successive councils and the now defunct Cwmbran Development Corporation.
