Cattybrook Brick Co, Torfaen Salvage, New Inn, Pontypool 11 August 2018

            Photographed at a local salvage yard, a blue-black coping brick from the Cattybrook Brick Company of Bristol. This is the first Cattybrook blue-black brick I have come across.

The quaintly named Cattybrook Brick Company was founded in 1865 in Almondbury, Bristol (close to the junction of the M4/M5).  The company is still operating within the Ibstock Group.  It is said that they provided 74,000,000 bricks for the construction of the Severn Railway Tunnel.  They also provided bricks for the rapid expansion of the town of Barry in the 19th C.  Coal was taken across the Bristol Channel to the West Country, the ships bringing back bricks, ridge tiles, chimney pots etc from places like Bristol and Bridgewater.
