Church of St Mary The Virgin, Oare, Somerset 12 April 2017

            From the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, it became accepted practice to mount Royal Arms in various media, on church walls, although there was no legal requirement to do so. Many have vanished, victims of neglect or Victorian refurbishments. About twenty percent now remain.

The church dates from at least the early 13th Century, the roofs of the nave and inner chancel probably date from the 15th Century. The pulpit, reading desk and box pews are 18th Century. The font basin is 13th Century, but the base and pedestal are early 19th Century.

The church and valley is of course famous following the success of the novel 'Lorna Doone' by RD Blackmore who knew the area from his grandfather being Rector of Oare from 1809 to 1842. The novel is based loosely on outlaws in the area at the time of the Monmouth Rebellion in the late 17th Century, some of whom may have been Doones or Dounes from Scotland.
