            One of the few misericords at the abbey not in the down position. This depicts a pair of fantastical two legged creatures  squaring up to each other.

A misericord, also known as "mercy seat", is a folding seat built into stalls in a church or cathedral. They date from the Middle Ages when long periods of standing were mandatory during the lengthy services. As an "act of mercy" to the elderly and infirm, stalls would be provided with a folding seat which gave an elderly cleric the ability to rest on the seat whilst looking as if he were standing. The practice dates from the 13th Century, but modern misericords are still produced. In keeping with ecclesiastical architecture, they are often richly carved, frequently with grotesque fantastical figures, caricatures of local people, scenes of everyday life, warning tales etc.

A Benedictine monastery was founded on the site in 1102 and work was started on building the abbey which was consecrated in  1121. It was extensively remodelled in the 15th Century but  during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries the abbey was disestablished and its assets seized. The townspeople purchased the abbey for £453.00 to use as a parish church. In 1875 controversial work was started by Sir Gilbert Scott  to "restore the abbey to what it should look like" (or what he thought it should look like).
