Barnstaple Souvenir 19/20th Century - a photo on Flickriver

            A souvenir pill box depicting Barnstaple Square. On the base is printed in an old fashioned script “Manufactured in Germany”. With the country of origin stated, this suggests it was made to comply with either the McKinley Tariff Bill of 1890, the British Merchandising Act of 1897, or both, since they made giving the country of origin mandatory as a protection to home manufacturers. Since in 1914 we were at war with Germany it must pre-date 1914. Once such imports resumed after WW1, goods from Germany were marked “Foreign Made”.
