Drill Hall, Cwm Cottage Street, Abertillery 4 October 2023

            In the 1890s, soldiers of H Company, 3rd Battalion South Wales Borderers Volunteer Brigade met in rooms above the Castle Inn; these were the predecessors of the later Territorial Army. In 1910, the Drill ~Hall was opened, the unit having in 1908 this time become 3rd Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment, Territorial Army, under the Haldane Reforms of the army. Today, the Territorial Army unit in Abertillery, with new premises behind the Drill Hall, is 211 (South Wales) Battery, 104  Field Regiment Royal Artillery.

The  regimental crest with "South Africa 1900.02" at the top of the facade. As a volunteer unit, soldiers were not compelled to serve abroad, but during the Boer War 1900-1902,  the regiment raised  Active Volunteer Companies to serve with the regular 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers, earing the 3 Monmouthshires the Battle Honour "South Africa 1900-02". 

In 1921, sailors of HMS Malaya, a veteran of the Battle of Jutland, were sent to the South Wales Valleys to protect mines from flooding during the strike and lockout by miners. 290 sailors were based at the Abertillery Drill Hall.
