GWR Railway Chair, Lappa Valley Railway, St Newlyn East, Cornwall 2 August 2024

            A GWR railway chair, one of several set in the “greens” of the putting course as hazards. Most are GWR, this one is marked GK&N for Guest, Keen and Nettlefold, and marked “April 1907”. 

In 1767, John Guest of Broseley was appointed manager of the Dowlais Ironworks. In 1786 his son Thomas took over the firm with his son-in-law, forming the very successful Dowlais Iron Company. In 1900 the company merged with the Patent Nut & Bolt Company to become Guest & Keen; in 1901 Guest & Keen acquired Nettlefolds to form Guest, Keen & Nettlefold, becoming known eventually as simply GKN.
