Tubewrights Footbridge at Pickford Bridge, Batford, Harpenden

            Walking across this bridge to the old Fine Fare shop, maybe for my Nan to buy me a comic is one of my childhood memories! The ford here was first bridged in the late 1920's / early 1930s and no doubt as road traffic increased a footbridge was needed and after the war this bridge was erected. For many years the bridge was painted in a drab grey and when plans were submitted to replace the road bridge in the late 1990's this bridge was due to be replaced with wider footpaths in the road bridge. The footbridge was also said to be in poor condition and was to be removed. It was at this point that the local community sprang to the rescue of its drab post war footbridge and a campaign was launched to save it. Eventually the funds were found for a full makeover and while the road bridge was replaced the footbridge was repaired and repainted into this attractive green colour scheme. Hopefully it will serve the community for another 50 years!
