Piguenit's Camp - a photo on Flickriver

Piguenit's Camp

After taking the photograph of the lagoon, the strong winds soon blew a fresh lot of snow-bearing clouds over the mountains. You can see the snow falling on the mountain tops, but I was pleased to see the translucent nature of those clouds. That's mainly why the sky forms the most part of this composition.

But there is another reason for this shot. It is also one of the locations where William Charles Piguenit (1836-1914) is reputed to have camped during an early surveying expedition in 1873. I have mentioned him before. He was the first great Australian born landscape artist. In the book "A Passion for Nature" (2012) we read of his first visit to Lake St Clair:

"Piguenit again kept a diary of the trip in which he wrote brief notes concerning walking times, striking camps, and names of places and landmarks. He indicated where and how often he was able to sketch 'foreground things', such as trees, and he habitually entered daily weather conditions. He also recorded taking twelve photographs. The bullock wagon enabled Piguenit to include a heavy, large format wet plate camera... He records taking the first three photographs from the south end of the lake. Unfortunately Piguenit's photographs have not survived." (p.38).

Now that is very exciting indeed. Piguenit was the first artist that we know who made use of a camera in Australia (the first photograph in Australia was taken in Sydney in 1841, and soon after in Hobart, Tasmania). But the process had become quite mechanical by now. And the three photographs taken at the south end of Lake St Clair would put Piguenit in almost the exact spot where this photograph was taken. So you can see why I made this a monochrome.
