For some months I have been planning a few trips to the Central Wales Line, but the weather and family circumstances delayed implementation of the plans, but on 26 January 2022 I was able to get to Llandrindod where some of the north and south bound services cross. In this shot TfW's 153362 departs with 2V08, the 10.09 Shrewsbury to Swansea having crossed 2M08, the 09.28 Swansea to Shrewsbury operated by 153353.

Llandrindod is a superb little town situated in the middle of Wales and was a big 'pull' in Victorian times as the town was a spa town (nothing to do with the convenience stores seen around the UK). The station has been important for much of its existence, with goods sidings in addition to the passenger services. The signal box seen in the picture has not always been on the platform, it controlled the loop just north of the station and after it was no longer needed for this purpose (see below) a preservation order was placed upon it, in 1989 it was erected on the platform and is occasionally opened for public viewing, close inspection of the structure suggests that it is in need of some refurbishment and a repaint. There was a passenger loop here until 1955 when the decline of many railways increased, the line that was removed was the one nearer the camera. Large amounts of regeneration money were found during the 1980s, some of which was spent on reinstating the loop and bringing back into passenger use the buildings on this the northbound platform. In addition, control of signalling and points was passed to Pantyffynnon signal box, which controls the line between there and the junction with the Marches line at Craven Arms.

The Central Wales Line is marketed under the Heart of Wales Line brand, it has seen usage increase aided by the supporting voluntary organisation, the Heart of Wales Line Travellers Association, a superb and very active group.
